How to Cheat on College Papers and Test by Vaughn Anderson

Do you want to know how to cheat on college papers and tests without getting caught? Well, this book: How to Cheat on College Papers and Test by Vaughn Anderson has the answers. The author, Vaughn Anderson, is “frustrated with the American Education System.” (Kindle Location 28). He believes it is a “system based on mental programming and educational fraud.” (Kindle Location 15). That seems to be his primary motivation for writing this book. In this article, we’ll go over what Anderson wrote about cheating.

The first chapter discusses how to plagiarize without getting caught. Anderson brings up a tip that I have not seen on any other article about getting away with plagiarism. He states you can “find audio on the internet to copy instead of copying a book or an article word for word.” (Kindle Location 62). He means that you can transcribe the audio. According to Anderson, there are lectures about every topic that can be found on the web. It seems like this would only work if there are not any transcriptions online of the audio already that plagiarism checkers could find.

Vaughn Anderson wrote that when checking for plagiarism, teachers will just “type a few sentences into a google search engine and see what comes up.” (Kindle Location 70). This book was published in 2012. Turnitin.com launched in 2000, per their website, and introduced their plagiarism prevention service at that time. Was Mr. Anderson not aware of this when he wrote the book? Professors do not only use Google to check for plagiarism.

Anderson points out that because teachers have to grade a ton of papers, they won’t have time to pay special attention to your paper. He states that “plagiarism usually goes unnoticed.” (Kindle Location 78). With the increased use of Turnitin.com by professors, that is no longer the case.

He states that it’s best to show that you are not a slacker in class; sit up front and get involved. If you’re quiet, you’ll stand out. The professor will pay extra attention to your paper because they’ll “be really curious to know what you have to say.” (Kindle Location 83). Nowadays, professors don’t discriminate between their students when it comes to taking an extra look at papers. With Turnitin.com and other plagiarism checkers, professors can catch plagiarism in no time.

Anderson then writes about buying papers online. He mentions a website, which I will not link on this article because they are a competitor, that he states “has some pretty decent papers.” (Kindle Location 83). While that website does sell custom essays, the ones that you can download are already complete. These essays have also been sold to multiple people. One more thing, that website also has an anti-plagiarism policy where you cannot submit their papers as your own work. So, what Anderson is suggesting here goes against the terms of service on that website. Based on his statement about saving time, he is telling the readers to buy the papers and, other than making sure the format is right and checking the sources, use the paper as is. That is bad advice.

A Teacher’s Weakness

In the next chapter, Anderson goes over the types of teachers you get in college. Specifically, he focuses on their weaknesses and how that can help you cheat. The good teacher’s weakness is that they try to get other things done while students are taking the exam. They may even leave the classroom during the exam. A lot of students will cheat at that point. (Kindle Location 97). Some classes are just impossible to cheat in due to the professor and how strict they are. In Anderson’s book, that would be the “Top Flight Security Professor” who has even “been taught how to identify suspicious hand movements.” (Kindle Location102). But, the easiest type of teacher to get away with cheating is the type that sticks to the curriculum and never changes the lesson plan. A student can just get answers that previous students have anonymously posted online. Anderson called this teacher, “The Commoner” (Kindle Location 130).

Anderson’s point with this chapter is that you need to know the type of teacher you have, so you can know whether or not to cheat in their class. But, regardless of what type of teacher you have, you’re always taking a risk when you cheat.

The Listening Device Method

Cheating with Headphones

Per Anderson, the best method to use for cheating on exams is the listening device method. He suggests using a voice recorder rather than a cell phone. He states that smartphones are hard to use discreetly. (Kindle Location 143). As an aside, I do agree with Vaughn Anderson regarding smartphones. Professors know the techniques of how they might be used during an exam. There’s really no foolproof way to look down at one in your lap without drawing attention, unless you have the type of professor that leaves the room during an exam.

First, Anderson how to use the cheap listening device method without being obvious. This involves some type of head covering, voice recorder, two pieces of head coverings (one goes over the other) and hooded sweatshirt. The way he makes the method work is not too elaborate. Basically, you keep the voice recorder in a pocket, and run the headphone wire up inside the back of your shirt, through the hood, and to the ears, under the head covering of your choice. Then, put on the hooded sweatshirt. (Kindle location 161-171).

Anderson points out that in order for this to work, you have to dress like this on your first day of class. That would be hard to do if it’s a warm day. But, it’s so the professor thinks that is how you always dress. (Kindle Location 174). The point to take away from this is that you can’t dress in a different style, and act in a different way, just on the day of the exam. That will draw suspicion.

Anderson also writes about a high-tech and more expensive listening device method in the last chapter. He writes about “invisible headphones”, a “wireless nano earpiece” that “is an electromagnetic wave inductive and receiving device.” (Kindle Location 182). This method to cheat on college papers and test discussed by Vaughn Anderson uses more equipment than the cheaper method. You have to have both a battery adapter and a cell phone adaptor. Nowadays, there are more varieties of wireless headphones and Bluetooth earpieces that don’t require the elaborate use that’s discussed in the book. The physical set-up discussed in the book is no longer necessary.

A Better Way

The better way to get through college is not to cheat by any means. Anderson does point out in the book that there’s going to be times when it’s just impossible to cheat, and it’s better not to during those times. But, cheating shouldn’t be done no matter how easy it is. The better way is to study hard, get tutoring and write your own papers.
