How Often Should You Study For College Classes?

How Often Should You Study For College Classes?

How often should you study for college classes? The answer to this question depends on many factors including but not limited to the following:

  • How many classes have you enrolled in?

  • What are your study habits?

  • How difficult do you find a particular class or program?

Many professors usually ask you to keep aside two hours per week to study for each credit hour you enroll for. This is a sure path to success. However, driven by many factors, students do not give this kind of time for studying. Thus, they end up feeling quite dejected when they see their transcripts with lower grades than what they actually need.

Time management

Time management is one of the key elements to succeeding anywhere and in anything. College life calls for an in-depth learning of this critical skill. Here are a few tips you can use to manage your time better and use it effectively to study well for all the courses you have signed on.

Make a study timetable, write it down, and put it up where you can see it clearly – You must allocate a couple of hours each day to study, revise, and read more about the lessons done in class. For this, make a timetable that is more or less in sync with your course timetable. Make sure for all the classes that happened on a particular day, you have made some time to revise by yourself after classes are done for the day.

Note down this detailed timetable and put it up on a soft board near your desk so that it is clearly visible to you. Make sure you stick to the timetable as much as you can. Of course, there could be days when you just could not find the time for this. That is why keeping it clearly visible will draw your attention to it and drive you to find some time to complete regular (daily would be great) study.

Prioritize your projects and assignments – For every course, the list of expected projects and assignments along with the deadline dates will be given in the first week of the semester. Go through this schedule and make a work timetable subject-wise. Break up large assignments into small, manageable chunks and allocate some time for each chunk. This way, you will not miss any of the deadlines and you will be able to manage your time better. Put this assignments-related timetable also in a place that is clearly visible to you.

Find a place that is conducive for study – In today's highly distracting world, there are zillion things that will tempt you away from studies. These tempting distractions include your friends inviting you to unending parties, your electronic devices, the social media, and more.

In order to avoid this barrage of distractions, it is important to find a quiet place that is conducive for study. I personally would recommend the library where most of these distracting elements are restricted. However, you can choose somewhere that you like. But, ensure your mobiles and/or social media notifications are switched off.

Remain focused – Making a timetable is one thing; implementing it unwaveringly with dogged determination is another thing altogether. And this implementation is entirely up to you. You have to find the will and courage to say no to temptations. You will have to find the will and courage to stick to your principles in the face of immense peer pressure.

The four years in college form the foundation of a successful life. It would be rather foolhardy to waste time now and then find desperate measures to do something successful in your life later on. So, make that timetable and stick to it diligently. I can assure you that you will find sufficient time for partying and socializing too.

Final Notes

I would like to add a word of caution here. Going overboard with your study schedule can also be counterproductive. It is important to combine fun with seriousness if you want a meaningful and happy college life. Just ensure to combine the two prudently.
