Writing a scientific research paper is an arduous and yet an exciting task. While the format of scientific research papers could vary depending on the subject/topic/college etc, the general format is as below:

Every scientific research paper must include a self-explanatory title page. The contents of the title page must clearly tell the readers what the paper is reporting about. For example, a title such as "A Biology experiment paper" tells nothing to the reader. However, a title such as "The Effects of Temperature and Light on the Growth and Spread of E.Coli in a controlled environment" is clear and succinct telling the readers exactly what the research paper is going to discuss.


This section is a concise summary of the entire research paper. Yet, it is not just a summary which is just a short restatement of a larger content. An abstract, on the other hand, should be self-explanatory but should not refer to the paper. The ideal length of an abstract is about 250-300 words. It should contain the purpose of the research paper, the general methods and materials used, a summary of the results, and finally, a summary of important conclusions arrived at.

Remember not to include information that is NOT there in the paper. Avoid detailed descriptions of methods, experiments, organisms, etc. You should not include figures, tables, or literature references. Since the abstract provides a wholesome overview of the entire research paper, it is usually written at the end of the paper. A great way to write the abstract of the research paper is to make a note of the main points in each section and then describe it in a little bit of detail so that the entire paper's contents are fitted into the abstract succinctly and clearly.


This section should explain your research question by placing it in the context of an established and larger theoretical framework. This will help your readers appreciate your work in the field of study. This section must contain the specific question(s) you have answered in your paper.

You could include other relevant background information including a summary of previous research done on the topic and how your work will help in either improving the understanding of the topic or filling up gaps that existed in the previous work. In this section, you must include accurate and detailed citations for all the background information you have provided.

Materials and Methods

Here, you must include details of the experiments (if any) that you conducted. You must include the description of the apparatus, of the design, how you observed and gathered data, and what kind of control you used. If you did your experiments in a natural habitat, then you must include the description of the area, where it is located, and when you did the experiment.

If you collected specimens, then you must include details of what, when, and where you collected them. The basic rule to remember here is that you must necessarily include all details of the experiment, equipment, and other details used in such a way that another researcher can use the data given to replicate the experiment.


Here, you must summarize the results you obtained through the experiments using narrative texts. While you must include tables, graphs, and figures wherever needed, these must necessarily be alongside narrative texts that explain this data. Raw data should never be presented in your scientific research data without an accompanying narrative text. Make sure the text and the data on the tables, figures, and other raw data matches and are in sync with each other.


This is the section where you must discuss your interpretation of the results. You should describe patterns and important correlations that you observe between the variables. You must explain how and why there are differences in the results based on differing variables. Explain how you arrived at your interpretation using the results you obtained.


In this section, you must state what the data means and connect the results and discussions to the original research question. The conclusion should NOT include reasons because these should have been included in the discussion section. Readers should be able to use the introduction and conclusion to understand the question and answer of the researcher even without going into other details of how he or she arrived at the answer to the question.


This is where you must give credit to and acknowledge the people who helped you in the process of completing the research paper.

Literature Cited

This section contains to all the sources that were referred to in the entire research paper. It should be listed in alphabetical order of the author's name. The literature cited page should be so detailed that any reader can refer to the original source by reading the information given on this page.

Scientific research paper writing is tough, tricky, and time-consuming to complete. You need to start thinking about it and preparing for it right from the beginning of the term or course.
