What Are Some Good Ways To Start A Research Paper?

One of the most critical aspects of a research paper is to get the introduction perfect. This being the start, it will set the tone for the entire research paper. So, I have chosen to answer your question, "What are some good ways to start a research paper?' by giving you some ways to write a good introduction.

Ways to write a good introduction for your research paper

The introductory part of a research paper gives you an opportunity to let the reader know in what direction your paper is going to move. A good introduction will, therefore, connect the reader's interest to the content of the research.

The introduction can be used to define unfamiliar terminology – If your research paper is about something that is not really common knowledge, then starting off your introduction by defining the unfamiliar terms is a good idea. However, I would like to warn you not to use this method if you are planning to employ a dictionary meaning and/or explaining something that most people will already be aware of.

Use this only when your content is about uncommon things. Moreover, your definition should not be one that is picked up from a dictionary. Instead, present your interpretation while hinting at what the thesis of your paper is going to be.

You can use a quotation or an anecdote in your introduction – A relevant or memorable story is a great way to catch the attention of the reader. But, it is imperative that you ensure the anecdote or the quotation is relevant and aligns well with the thesis you have in mind. You could use a mythical or historical tale that aims to find similar answers as does your paper. Or you could use a story of an earlier researcher in your domain to start off your paper.

You can use contrasting elements to introduce your thesis – Readers will be able to grasp an idea better with contrasting elements. For example, you can say that historically something worked in a particular way. Then you could add a "however," or "but," and expand on something that is quite contrary to this common theory. This method is extremely useful in an argumentative-based research paper.

You can use the funnel method – This method entails starting off with a broad overview and then progressively narrowing the idea down to your specific thesis statement. This method works quite well, especially if the reader is broadly aware of the subject at hand. This kind of "funneling" introduction will easily connect the reader's own broad perspectives to your focused thesis.

For example, if your topic was to teach art to mentally challenged children, you could start with the broadest concept of teaching art, then narrow it down to teaching art to children, and further narrow it down to teaching art to mentally challenged children.

You can prepare the reader for the conclusion in the introduction – This works well as the reader is made aware of what to expect in the research paper. The introduction should only have a hint of what the end result is expected to be. Your final and concluding paragraph, however, should be more detailed and written in the context of what you have presented in your paper.

Final Notes

The introduction can make or break the entire research paper. So, spending some time and brainstorming ideas before you arrive at the best method of introduction is a very prudent plan that will ensure your paper achieves above-par standards.
